Department of Commerce

Commerce Faculty started functioning in 1970, the year in which our college
is established. In those days, students were not ready to join the Faculty
as there was a separate established college for the Commerce Stream, whereas ours
was a multi faculty college with newly appointed teachers.
In the early days, the main problem was shortage of students. To overcome this,
the teachers decided to go to the neighbouring villages, at the beginning of the
academic year, to persuade the students to join the college. In order to attract
students, in those days, we offered free lodging and concessional boarding to them
in addition to books. Even then, students were reluctant to join our college. Those
who joined had no academic background and were mostly first generation literates
with poor academic score.
In order to improve the academic performance of the
students, it was decided in the academic year 1974-75, to engage extra periods daily
for all the three B.Com. classes. This tradition we are following to this day. Another
decision the teachers took voluntarily and which we still follow is the curtailment
of Deepawali Vacation by half and engage extra classes during this period. As a
consequence of our extra efforts, in the year 1977-78, all the merit holders of
B.Com. Final year examination were from our college. This was a turning point in
the history of our Faculty. Thereafter, almost every year at least one or two students
of our college were in the merit list of B.Com. University Examinations. Again in
the year 1995-96 all the merit holders of B.Com. final year examination belonged
to our college.
Due to our consistent efforts, the strength of students
joining our Faculty started increasing year by year. As a result, we introduced
one more division which has English as the medium of instruction in the academic
year 1985-86. At present, we offer both English and Marathi media for B.Com. students.
Because of these initiatives, at a time when other colleges in Marathwada region
are facing acute shortage of students in the commerce faculty, we have more students
than we can accommodate. From the academic year 2005-06 we have discontinued
Marathi medium classes.
The Marathwada University at Aurangabad, to which we were then affiliated, was bifurcated
in 1994, and a new University called Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada Universty
is established at Nanded. We are now affiliated to this newly established university.
It is a matter of pride for us that since the establishment of the new university,
all the three merit rank holders of B.Com final year examinations
belonged to our college. Except in 2001-2002, out of three
merits declared by the University, first two merit rank holders
belonged to our college.
From the academic year we have started two years full time P.G. course
in commerce.
