DEPARTMENT OF RUSSIAN

In the year 1971, a treaty of friendship and mutual co-operation was signed between India and the U.S.S.R. In the same year the Management of this college established the Department of Russian.

It should be noted that till 1971 there was no Department of Russian Mahatashtra state. Teachers were not available, so our college contacted the Centre of Russian Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. The Centre of Russian Studies, J.N.U, recommended one teacher for the post .  A contract was signed in 1971 with the teacher.

U.S.S.R. was a super power in those days and Russian was the official language, so in the beginning the response to the Russian language was enthusiastic. However, within four months the number of students interested in studying Russian dwindled to three and the teacher of Russian, who had come from an urban background, could not get adjusted to Latur. In spite of the requests of the Principal and the Management of the college to stay here, the appointed teacher gave up his job and left Latur for good.

In 1975 the present Head of the Department was appointed as Lecturer in History and Russian, as there was apprehension in the minds of many about the continuation of the Department of Russian. From the next academic year (1976-77) the said teacher  became a full-time Lecturer in Russian.

In 1990 we introduced Russian as one of the optional subjects at U.G. level.

Earlier in our college we had (i) Certificate and Diploma courses in Russian (ii) Russian at the Junior college level (iii) Russian as a second language at the B.A./ B.Com / B.Sc. level and (iv) Russian as an optional subject at the B.A. level. It is a matter of pride for us that ours is the only college in Maharashtra where Russian is taught (at the degree level) as a Second Language.

At present Russian is taught as a second language at Junior as well as Senior college level.
