Department of Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry is a premier center of science education established with the Core Chemistry wing in 1971–72 and the Analytical Chemistry in 1985. The department offers PG programs in Organic Chemistry since 2014. The department excels in academics, national student placements, industrial partnerships, and research-driven learning under the structural "Shahu Pattern".
According to the National Education Policy (NEP 2020) the department implemented curriculum overhaul, starting from the 2023–2024 academic year and scaling through 2025–2026, the department successfully rolled out the B.Sc. Programme. Currently, as per the NEP 2020, Core Chemistry is run as major and Analytical Chemistry as minor.

The department continues its momentum as a prime research hub supported under the DST-FIST Scheme (Phase 2 since 2023-24) and UGC-CPE (Phase III) "Star Department" lineage.

A high-level symposium sponsored by the Science & Engineering Research Board (SERB) in 2021-22 and core equipment’s from DST-FIST grant are integral parts of the departmental research.

Student selection into the elite NIUS Exposure-cum-Enrichment Camp in Chemistry by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE, TIFR), IIT Kharagpur and NIT’s, the department has sustained its track record of funnelling students into apex national institutions.

The department has conducted a national Conferences “Chem-FAST” under PM- USHA Scheme in 2025-26. The departmental faculty has published design patent, availed MRP from Rajiv Gandhi Science & Technology Commission (RGSTC). As a Scientific Social Responsibility (SSR) the department has organized number of Hands-on training program for faculties and students outside the college. Also, the department continuously extending the outreach activities to school students.

The department is having 03 Research Guides and 06 Research Scholars pursuing their Ph.D. Till the date 03 students awarded Ph.D. from the department. The faculties have published their research papers with renowned publishers such as ACS, RSC, Elsevier, Springer, etc cited in Scopus and Web of Science indexing and abstracting services. The students are placed in reputed companies like Macleods Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Sarigam; Cipala, Goa; Serum Institute of India Pvt Ltd, Pune, etc in campus and off-campus drives.

B.Sc. Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry Programme Specific Outcomes

On completion of the Program student will be able to

1)Integrate their knowledge of chemical theories with critical thinking skills in order to become problem solvers.

2) Follow and understood general laboratory practice guidelines, including safety.

3) Handle instruments for basic and modern chemical analysis.

4) Secure profitable employment in industry or in government sector.

5) Study Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry in academic and industrial courses.

6) Processes the chemical experiments used in industries.

7) Interpret and analyze chemical analysis and related data.

M.Sc. Chemistry Programme Specific Outcomes

1) Develop abilities to apply the knowledge of contents of principles of Chemistry.

2) Develop skills required in Chemistry such as the proper handling of apparatus, chemicals and sophisticated instruments, ability to analyze the data and its interpretation.

3) Learn to do their research ethically, with areas at the forefront of Chemical Sciences, with interdisciplinary approach.

4) Qualify examinations such as NET, SET, GATE, JRF, etc Develop proper attitude towards the subject and ability to explore the subject up to thorough depth retaining their interest.

5) Secure jobs in industries, teaching profession and the government organizations.

6) Do their research ethically, with areas at the forefront of Chemical Sciences, with interdisciplinary approach.
